Vanuatu: What Kind of Country Is It?

Many financially independent people are increasingly deciding to invest money in this country's economy. And there are reasons for that. Details on the terms of Vanuatu's citizenship program are available separately. But let's take it in order.

Flights and Visa

Vanuatu's territory consists of 83 islands, 18 of which remain uninhabited today. The country's capital is Port Vila - not only one of the largest population centers in the country, but also its main economic hub.

Since 2016, a visa-free agreement has been in effect between Vanuatu and Russia. This means Russians who decide to visit this country do not need to apply for a visa. They can freely cross the Vanuatu border and stay in the country for no more than 90 days within a 6-month period.

There are currently no direct flights between Russia and Vanuatu. Reaching the islands requires several connections. The optimal route involves a connection in Australia or New Zealand.

International flights are served by the airport located in Port Vila. This is not the country's only airport, but the others serve only domestic flights.

Ticket price depends on how urgent the trip is. If you buy your ticket a few days before departure, expect to pay significantly more. On average, a flight from Australia or New Zealand costs a foreign tourist around $200. A last-minute flight costs more - up to around $500 per traveler.

The Islands of Vanuatu: A Brief History

The islands of Vanuatu were inhabited by Melanesian peoples over a long period of time. The culture and way of life of the indigenous population were closely tied to the surrounding nature and the ocean. Various tribes and clans on the islands developed their own unique languages, customs, traditions, and religious beliefs.

In the 18th century, European explorers and navigators such as James Cook and Louis-Antoine de Bougainville began arriving in the region to study the islands. By the late 19th century, this territory had become a prime target of interest for European colonizers.

In 1887, the islands were divided between Great Britain and France:

The main social and cultural changes in the country began during the period of colonial administration. Western culture, religion, and economics had a significant influence on the local population. However, most traditions and customs were preserved.

The New Hebrides gained independence in 1980. It was essentially from this moment that the islands took on their modern name, the Republic of Vanuatu.

Climate and Nature

Vanuatu is dominated by a tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year.

Seasonal climate changes in Vanuatu are driven by two main factors: an air flow from Southeast Asia, which brings a humid seasonal wind with rain from November to April, and an air flow from Antarctica, the main cause of the drier seasonal wind.

Vanuatu's nature impresses with its richness and diversity. The islands' main attractions include:

The most favorable weather occurs between May and October. The average temperature during these months ranges from 25-27 degrees Celsius.

Vanuatu's islands are of volcanic origin. Mount Yasur, an active volcano, is located on Tanna Island. Its most recent activity was recorded in 2006 and 2008.

Espiritu Santo is the most mountainous island in Vanuatu, with elevations exceeding 1,800 meters. Mount Tumburu, located on Espiritu Santo, is the republic's highest peak. Its height reaches 1,879 meters.

Some of Vanuatu's islands, such as Malekula and Pentecost, have plateau areas with diverse vegetation cover and valleys.

Vanuatu's islands, located in the Pacific Ocean, are home to many plants and animals.

More than 850 species of exotic plants grow here, such as palms, myrtle-family trees, bamboo, fruit trees (mango, papaya, and others), and a wide variety of flowers.

Vanuatu's animal life is also rich in interesting species. Local inhabitants include colorful birds such as parrots, lorikeets, and blue doves.

Lizards, crabs, and other marine creatures also live on the islands. In the waters around Vanuatu's islands, tourists can watch whales and dolphins swimming.

Marine life and coral reefs are particularly interesting aspects of Vanuatu's biodiversity. Every year, a huge number of tourists come here, drawn to the islands for diving.

Attractions, Infrastructure, and Recreation

Vanuatu is not only an excellent platform for investment, but above all a well-known resort destination whose tourist flow grows every year.

Island Attractions

Vanuatu's islands can be called a hub of unique tourist attractions that draw the attention of foreign travelers.

  1. Beaches are the first thing tourists come here for. White sand and bright blue water are the main draw. Tourists come not only to sunbathe, but also to dive and take part in other water sports.
  2. Traditional culture. Arriving on the islands, tourists get the chance to learn about Melanesian culture and local customs. The capital is home to the National Museum, which tells the story of local life and the formation of century-old traditions.
  3. Coral reefs. Vanuatu offers excellent opportunities for diving and snorkeling. It's a great way to explore the depths of the seafloor.

Most of the country's best-known attractions are located on Espiritu Santo Island. This place is known for its unique natural and cultural sites. Experienced travelers recommend that first-time visitors be sure to visit Big Bay National Park and Million Dollar Point - the best diving spot.

Tourism is highly developed on the island. Local entrepreneurs actively run adventure tours and offer foreigners helicopter trips, jeep rides through the jungle, mountain biking, swims in underwater caves, and much more.

Infrastructure

Vanuatu is a country with underdeveloped infrastructure. However, the government is actively working to improve conditions on the populated islands.

Espiritu Santo has a limited road network, most of which is unpaved. Public transport on the islands is limited and mostly consists of buses and taxis. The vast majority of local residents buy or rent motorcycles and scooters - the most practical vehicles, letting them reach their destination quickly while significantly saving the family budget.

Energy. Energy supply on Vanuatu's islands mostly relies on diesel generators. However, some islands are also developing renewable energy, including solar and wind power.

Water supply. Water supply on Vanuatu's islands mostly comes from local sources such as rivers and lakes. In some places, plumbing and sewage systems are also available.

Healthcare. Medical infrastructure here is limited, especially on remote islands. However, Espiritu Santo has several hospitals and medical centers that provide basic medical services. In case of serious illness or injury, it is recommended to seek treatment at medical centers on neighboring islands or in other countries.

Telecommunications. There is a fairly well-developed mobile and fixed-line network here, covering most of the area of the republic's densely populated islands.

Hotels and tourist infrastructure. This is one of the most developed sectors. Most hotels are located on islands with the busiest tourist traffic.

Where is Vanuatu located? This is a question tourists accustomed to visiting classic European resorts ask themselves. Vanuatu is a republic located in the Pacific Ocean, not far from Australia. Its location has significantly shaped the leisure options available to local residents.

Tourists and local residents spend most of their time on the beach. Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu's largest island, is home to famous beaches such as Champagne Beach, Long Beach, Pango Beach, and others. Here you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, diving, and other water sports, or simply relax on the sandy beaches and enjoy the beauty of the ocean.

Politics, Economy, and Cost of Living

Vanuatu operates under a parliamentary democracy. Elections for the head of state are held every four years.

In addition, this country is a member of leading international organizations, such as the UN, the WTO, the South Pacific Commission, and the Pacific Islands Forum.

The country's economy is built around its highest-priority sectors. Agriculture, livestock farming, fishing, and tourism are all well developed here.

Vanuatu's population today numbers approximately 300,000 people, most of whom were born and raised on the islands.

Now let's talk about the cost of living. Most food is brought in from the mainland. This means food prices here differ significantly from those in Russia. The cost of a basic basket of goods for a family of three ranges from $3,000 to $3,500.

Milk and bread are the most expensive products on the islands: a liter carton of milk costs $7, and a standard loaf of bread costs $2 to $2.50.

The cost of renting property here is relatively low. For example, a one-bedroom apartment in the capital can be rented for an average of around $2,000 a month. In less popular towns, an apartment can be rented for as little as $1,000.

The size of utility payments depends on the volume of energy and water consumed. But on average, a family budgets $200 to $300 a month for this expense.

Real Estate and Construction

Villas and private homes are the most common type of real estate. There are almost no high-rise buildings here. Developers prefer to limit themselves to low-rise buildings that, by design, contain several units.

Vanuatu has a fairly relaxed approach to setting property prices. For example, a one-bedroom apartment in the center of the capital can be purchased for $150,000. Villas within walking distance of beaches popular with tourists are a pricier option, starting from $200,000-250,000.

Citizenship by Investment

You can obtain this country's citizenship if you invest a minimum of $130,000 in the National Development Fund.

Vanuatu has the simplest citizenship-by-investment program available. On average, passport processing takes 1.5-2 months. The applicant does not need to pass an exam on knowledge of the national language, culture, or constitutional norms.

Processing speed is not the only advantage of citizenship by investment. Holding this passport also gives foreign citizens the ability to:

The United Kingdom is not the only country with which Vanuatu has a visa-free agreement. Vanuatu citizens can also travel to more than 90 countries around the world. This includes all Caribbean countries, Hong Kong, Singapore, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mauritius, Moldova, Russia, Montenegro, the Philippines, and others. An e-visa is required to visit Georgia, Australia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, India, Vietnam, Turkey, the UAE, and some other countries. A visa on arrival is issued to Vanuatu citizens in Egypt, Jordan, the Maldives, Madagascar, Nepal, the Seychelles, and Thailand.

Countries that are members of the European Union have temporarily suspended visa-free travel for Vanuatu citizens. The country has been given until August 2024 to revise its Due Diligence review procedures and develop a more thorough vetting process for applicants under the citizenship-by-investment program.
