The required income level depends on the number of participants. If one person is applying for a residence permit, their monthly passive income must be at least 2,580 EUR. If the applicant's spouse is also obtaining a residence permit, the minimum income amount increases by 20%. Another 5% is added for each child included in the application. A residence permit issued on the basis of Residenza Elettiva does not give foreign nationals the right to be employed within Italy. Income can come from copyright, licenses, entrepreneurial activity, renting out property, dividends on deposits, or a pension.

The process of obtaining official status can be roughly divided into the following stages:

• Preparing documents and finding housing to buy or rent. An application for a Residenza Elettiva visa can be filed through the consulate in your country of residence. At this same stage, a state fee of 116 EUR is paid.

• Receiving the residence permit. Police officers review the application within 60 business days. If the applicant's income meets the established requirements, the residence permit card is issued. This category of Italian residence permit is valid for two years. It can be renewed an unlimited number of times. However, before each renewal it is recommended to check the current minimum passive income requirement. After 10 years of continuous residence in the country, the foreign national can apply for citizenship through naturalization.
