Why replace the passport

Grenada citizenship is granted under an investment program. Financially independent foreign nationals can obtain a passport from this country by buying real estate or by contributing funds to the National Transformation Fund. In the first case, the investor can recover the funds by selling the residential property at least five years after obtaining official status. The second route to citizenship is the less advantageous option, since it involves a non-refundable investment.

Passport replacement is therefore, in effect, a control mechanism that lets the government track compliance with the program's conditions. If an investor sells the property earlier than the required term, they lose citizenship.

So why did the Grenada government decide to extend passport validity? It's quite simple. This document significantly simplifies obtaining US tourist visas, which are issued for 10 years. That meant the visa's validity was twice as long as the passport's. As a result, citizens of the country had to carry two identity documents at once: the expired one and the newly issued one.

Russians who obtain official Grenada status are given a passport and a certificate of citizenship. The first document must be renewed periodically. The second confirms naturalization and stays with the investor until they voluntarily renounce citizenship.

The Grenada passport replacement process

There's no need to fly to the country in person to update your documents. Passport replacement is handled through the embassy or consulate.

It is recommended to submit the passport replacement application 2-6 months before its expiry date. The new document is prepared within a month and handed to the applicant through a consul or embassy representative.

Renewing the passport does not require a new investment in Grenada real estate or the National Transformation Fund. Government representatives simply verify compliance with the investment program's conditions and issue a decision in the applicant's favor.

It's important to note that passport replacement is not free. A government fee applies. Before the changes took effect, the fee was $250. Today the service costs $350.

The application for passport replacement must be filed not only by the main investor but also by family members participating in the government program. It should also be noted that previously issued passports are valid for five years (the expiry date is stated in the document itself). Passports issued to adult citizens after the changes took effect are valid for 10 years.

Holding a Grenada passport gives Russians the ability to travel without restrictions, and also guarantees benefits such as:

• visa-free travel to 144 countries (including the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Singapore);
• simplified processing of US tourist and business visas;
• protection of company assets and owners' personal data (beneficial-owner information is not entered in the trade register);
• tax optimization: Grenada has no tax on worldwide income, inheritance, or capital gains.

Passport replacement does not require passing a state-language or history exam. The only thing the investor must provide is a police clearance certificate and confirmation of freedom from dangerous viral and infectious diseases.
